Middlesex resumed at 232 for 5, a precarious lead of 142, and they struggled from the moment David Nash was out almost immediately. Nash added only one to his overnight 15 before he was lbw to Alan Mullally and then Chad Keegan was lbw to Alex Morris without scoring.
Any hopes Middlesex had of building a substantial lead rested on opener Andrew Strauss and his ability to guide the tail. But Strauss quickly lost Angus Fraser, Tim Bloomfield and Phil Tufnell and Middlesex were all out for 253.
This left Strauss, who scored only 12 in an hour and a half, 112 not out, carrying his bat in an innings which lasted six hours, 14 minutes.
Mullally finished with 3-70, taking three of the wickets in the morning session, Shaun Udal took 3-50 and Dimitri Mascarenhas finished with 3-21.
This gave Mascarenhas match figures of 9-47 but whether or not it was a match-winning performance remains to be seen.
Hampshire made a poor start, losing Giles White to a catch at first slip off Bloomfield and Kenway followed soon afterwards to a diving catch at the wicket off Angus Fraser.
This made Hampshire 9 for 2 and both Kendall and Robin Smith survived only with difficulty in taking Hampshire to lunch at 20 for 2.
