When Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden were both finally dismissed Australia
were 246/3 after just 39.3 overs. The partnership of 219 for the second
wicket had taken its toll on the Indians. The home side's fielding was less
than inspired, the bowler's shoulders drooped and this worked to the
advantage of the Australians. Micheal Bevan coming at number four helped
himself to a characteristic unbeaten 43 off 41 deliveries. Steve Waugh, the
next man in struck a breezy 35 before falling to Zaheer Khan. Shane Lee,
using the long handle to good effect clouted 25 off just 11 balls and
Australia posted a mammoth total of 338/4 off their allotted 50 overs.
