(2nd Test: India v England at Ahmedabad, 11-15 Dec 2001)
Marcus Trescothick and Mark Butcher gave England a good start by adding 124 runs for the first wicket after Nasser Hussain had won the toss and elected to bat at Motera in Ahmedabad. Butcher made 51 off 130 balls with the help of nine fours and was caught behind off Anil Kumble. Hussain (1) was given out lbw and Michael Vaughan (11) was given out caught at forward short-leg, two erroneous decisions handed out by the umpire Ian Robinson. Trescothick batted on bravely, using his feet against the spinners and playing the sweep shot to perfection. Trescothick was on 99* at tea break and was caught behind off the bowling of Kumble soon after play resumed.
