(1st Test: Galle - 14-18 Aug 2001)

Muttiah Muralitharan the 'wizard of the off spin', has mastered his trade and can make the ball turn and jump on any surface. He ran through the Indian innings as there was very little sting left in the tail. Venkatesh Prasad (20) gave good support to Rahul Dravid for the ninth wicket, adding 60 runs, taking the score to 180. Srinath did not come out to bat because of his injured hand. Dravid remained unbeaten on 61 off 172 balls, hitting half a dozen fours. It was Muralitharan who finished with the figures of 26.5-10-49-5, taking his match tally to 8/90. Jayasuriya walked out with Atapattu and knocked off the winning runs to register a convincing ten wicket victory. The Lankan skipper walked away with the Man of the Match award. India had once again lost a Test match abroad. The Lankans outplayed them in all departments of the game.
