(2nd Test: Kandy - 22-26 Aug 2001)

India were set a target of 264 runs for a win. SS Das was lucky to survive a few loud shouts for lbw from Vaas. The left-handed pacer did even knock back Das' stumps, only to find that he had bowled a no ball. Das' vigil ended when Muralitharan bowled him after he made a patchy and forgettable 19 runs. In walked Rahul Dravid and played perhaps the innings of his Test career so far. Always looking out for runs, he kept the scorers busy. Dravid and Ramesh added 61 runs for the second wicket to take India to 103 in the 36th over. Jayasuriya caught Ramesh (31) at first slip off Fernando. The two most senior players in the Indian team, Sourav Ganguly and Dravid took India to the verge of a memorable win. Dravid had a lucky escape early in his innings, not given out lbw, finally got out to Muralitharan after making 75 runs off 123 balls with a dozen sweetly struck fours. India were 194/3 in the 62nd over with 70 more runs required for the win.
