(2nd Test: Kandy - 22-26 Aug 2001)

Sourav Ganguly blossomed after the dismissal of Dravid. Ganguly made the Sri Lankans pay dearly for letting him off twice; Muralitharan and Arnold putting down chances that would have been taken otherwise. Ganguly scored 50 runs off the 70 runs partnership with Md. Kaif (19) to remain unbeaten on 98. The Indian Skipper was clearly unlucky not to get to his three-figure mark as Kaif nonchalantly struck the winning boundary. This was truly a memorable performance by a depleted Indian side. They showed a lot of resolve and determination to claw back to win the Test match and square the series. For the Indian captain this was sweet success, the third Test match win abroad and probably the toughest one so far. He made his willow do all the talking to silence his critics, which does augur well for Indian cricket. Ganguly richly deserved the Man of the Match award presented to him.
