(Colombo 6th ODI - 28 Jul 2001)
India had a very good opportunity to win the match, but started off
disastrously. Amay Khurasiya, drafted into the team as a specialist
opener, didn't do anything spectacular. He was bowled second ball by
Vaas. Virender Shewag (27) and VVS Laxman put together 67 runs for
the second wicket off 13.1 overs. Shewag didn't do anything much
to suggest that he is going to make the opening slot one of his own.
He was made to struggle by Dilhara Fernando who bowled with genuine pace
and bounce. Shewag was lucky enough to survive when he fended a quick
and nasty one from Fernando to Jayawardene at second slip, who spilled
the chance. In the meanwhile Laxman gave enough signs of his good
form, spanking three boundaries off one over from Vaas.
