By virtue of making it to the final of the ICC World Cricket League Division 4 in Tanzania in October 2008, Hong Kong qualified for the six-team ICC World Cricket League Division 3 tournament to be played in Buenos Aires, Argentina during 24-31 January 2009. Once there, they will meet the ICC WCL Division 4 champions Afghanistan and the other teams in the division, namely Cayman Islands, Papua New Guinea, Uganda and hosts Argentina.

Teams will be aiming to reach the tournament final, as doing so will qualify them for ICC World Cup Qualifier (formerly the ICC Trophy) - a 12-team event to be played in South Africa in April 2009 [see ICC World Cricket League Explained | ICC WCL Structure PDF 191KB]. The bottom-two placed teams in the Argentina tournament will be demoted to division four.

The Hong Kong team embarked on a pre-tournament tour to Sri Lanka as part of their preparations for the ICC World Cricket League Division 3.

31.01.2009 FINAL and Play-offs Cancelled

The final and play-off matches will not be played following abandonment of round 5 games between Uganda v. Argentina and Afghanistan v. Cayman Islands which will be replayed on this day instead. There is no provision in the playing conditions to move the final and play-offs so the final team placings will be determined from the points table.

Update: Uganda beat Argentina and Afghanistan beat Cayman Islands in the replayed matches. The results and run-rate adjustments mean Afghanistan are the ICC WCL Division 3 champions while Uganda finish second. Both teams secure berths at the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiying tournament to be played in South Africa in April 2009. PNG and Hong Kong retain their places in Division 3 while Cayman Islands and Argentina are demoted to Division 4.
