Leading from the front (January 2000)
When Mohammed Kaif was selected captain for the Under 19 World
Cup in Sri Lanka, it was a just recognition of his durability as
a class performer ever since he first made a splash four years
earlier in the Under 15 World Cup. Unlike many others, Kaif has
maintained his level of performance since then, being one of only
three survivors in Colombo from the Under 15 squad.

Living up to the challenge (February 2000)
Mohammed Kaif's scores of 90 and 93 in the Challenger Trophy
indicated that he had finally crossed the Rubicon and set his
sights on higher laurels. Having excelled himself at the junior
level, his impatience at seeking a more appropriate forum to
parade his skills can be forgiven. Kaif was voted best batsman of
the tournament and, sure enough, he was rewarded with a place in
the national squad for the Test series against South Africa.

Kaif arrives at the international scene (March 2000)
When India were drubbed 2-0 by the South Africans newspapers were
filled with post mortems. Endless theories were espoused about
what went wrong, who was to blame and finally what needs to be
done. When you lose so comprehensively to a touring side it is
difficult to be positive. The openers struggled, the pacemen were
wayward and the spinners could not make their presence felt.
There was only one positive thing to come out of the whole
series. Mohammed Kaif.
