Chopra knock puts India in command
A quality cricketer will always cash in on any opportunity put before them. When India played Netherlands at the Lincoln Green in the CricInfo Women's World Cup 2000, Anjum Chopra did just that. Having gotten off to a good start in the previous match India played, Chopra could not go on to make a big score. The fact that she only made 13 against the South Africans spurred Chopra on in the game against the Netherlands.
Netherlands skipper Pauline te Beest won the toss and sent India in to bat. Unfortunately for her, things went against the Dutch from that moment on. Chopra, in the company of skipper Anju Jain took a great liking to the Dutch bowling. Opening bowlers Elise Reynolds and Sandra Kottmann had no answer to Chopra's determination. Whether it was easing the ball into the gaps or driving it to the boundary, Chopra went about her business fluently.
Even the fact that Anju Jain was trapped LBW with the score on 65 did not cause Chopra to falter. Pacing her innings well, Chopra brought up her first half-century of the tournament off 85 balls. The four boundaries she struck on the way to her fifty were a treat to watch for the spectators gathered. But that wasn't all. Chopra got together with Mithali Raj and forged a 101 run partnership that all but took the game away from the Netherlands.
Taking her personal tally to 69, Anjum Chopra notched up the top score of the match before falling to Caroline Salomons. Her innnings put India in a comfortable position at 166/2. The stage was set for the final charge, and India managed 275 in their allotted 50 overs. Chopra's innings was the backbone of the Indian total. As expected, the target was too stiff for the Netherlands side and India won the match by a whopping 154 runs. For her efforts, Chopra was adjudged the player of the match. Not too many people would argue with that decision!
