Dasgupta creates a ripple on debut

It is every young batsman's dream to score a century on debut but Bengal's Deep Dasgupta says he never realised it was such a big occasion when he accomplished the feat in the Ranji Trophy Super League in February 1999. In the presence of the veteran Saba Karim, who was also the skipper, Dasgupta's route into the Bengal team as wicket keeper was sealed for the moment. It was Deep Dasgupta's class act in the Duleep Trophy that first brought him into the line of vision of the national selectors. Having been nosed out by Bihar's MS Dhoni in the East Zone team for the Deodhar Trophy earlier in the season, Dasgupta finally found the breaks rolling his way. Played in the run-up to the Australian visit, the competition assumed greater import, giving the fringe players a chance to hawk their wares.
