A nail-biting thriller at Newlands in Cape Town, a do-or-die
match for both Sri Lanka and West Indies, and in the end Sri
Lanka won by 6 runs. It just couldn’t have got any close than
this, a remarkable day/night game that went down to the wire. It
had all the trappings of a thriller, action, blood, heroics and
what not! Sri Lanka won the crucial toss and elected to bat
first. The 1996 World Cup champions lost their first wicket in
the fourth over of the match, Marvan Atapattu was brilliantly run
out by Pedro Collins off his own bowling. Sanath Jayasuriya
played a circumspect knock, hardly threatening to take the
bowling apart.
