The Australia-Pakistan match on Tuesday was expected to be one of
the high-profile clashes of the 2003 World Cup. But it had its
thunder stolen by a shocking revelation just a few hours before
it got underway. Australian television channels reported that
champion leg-spinner Shane Warne, for whom the World Cup was to
be his last ODI hurrah, had decided to fly home after testing
positive for a diuretic – a substance that is often used as a
weight-reducing drug. "I'm shocked because I have not taken
performance enhancing drugs. I did take a fluid tablet before my
comeback game in Sydney and didn't know it contained any banned
substance," the leg-spinning great observed in the press-
conference during which he confirmed the news.
