With the score reading 88/7 at the time Bond finished his spell, Bevan
and Andy Bichel, the two batsmen in the centre, had every reason to
feel demoralised. But as New Zealand discovered to their chagrin,
cricketers representing champion sides are not given to despondency.
Gutsy and focused, the two men put on a fine display of common-sense
batting, hauling their team back into the fray. Bichel and Bevan, who
had forged a match-winning partnership against England in a Pool A
match at the same ground, ended up adding 97 vital runs in 21.2 overs.
