Hi, I am interested in playing cricket but I have never played before. I am 16 and I thought I might have left it a bit late for a beginner. My school didnt do girls cricket and now I have got to college everyone seems to want players who are already members of teams elsewhere so they wont have to train them much. I dont know what I really want to know except if anybody could sympathise or perhaps give some advice. I am from the Bury area of Greater Manchester if there are any clubs looking for players to train around there... Thanks anyway.

Redoubtables Women's Cricket Club congratulate our players that have been selected to face the Aussie's in warm up games and hope they can make the best of the opportunity. We also wish good luck to 'tails' [Clare Taylor] our wicketkeeper batsman who is in the England squad for the Test and One Day series.
Redoubtables run two adult teams and have a junior section, we play in the south London borough of Sutton on the outskirts of Surrey and welcome players of all abilities. If you would like to join us or just want more info about the club you can visit our web site www.redoubtables.care4free.net/

Thanks for the info Ralph.
Presumably if these girls are county juniors they are already members of clubs but if not, send them to us!! We'd be ecstatic to get a player under 30 :-) Plus they'd be guaranteed a game every week which isn't the case at all clubs.

Ampleforth College (Just north of York) is venue for 8 English counties to compete at U15 level. In two groups of four counties, group matches (40 overs) will take place between Thu Aug 2nd - Sat Aug 4th, with final matches on Sun Aug 5th. Yorkshire are attending, so hopefully plenty of opportunity to see 'local cricketing talent' for the Bradford Women's Club.

In reply to the letter posted by Anne Miller on how to increase number of women playing cricket.
If you want to know how to develop girls cricket I believe Preston, England is developing the model all other areas nationally should use as a blue print. The answer is to:
Apply for an 'Awards for All' grant (£5000 to pay for kit, clothing, equipment and to train coaches)
Have a development officer assigned to girls cricket to co-ordinate and set up a schools winter indoor cricket comps at U13 & U15 level.
From that, co-ordinate and start school summer cricket leagues (8 a side / 16 overs).
Have both competitiond played with a soft ball.
Hold trials / coaching 1/2 day (during school time), inviting the best girls down to training (Introduce the hard ball).
Get a club involved (that is looking for lottery money!) to start teams at U13 & U15 level and to put a night aside for girls cricket coaching.
You then have a pyramid - county, town, schools.
For further details give me a call (01995 601 766) or e-mail ( richardmayhew@supanet.com ). I hope this information has been of some use.

It's good if somewhat surprising to me to see in the ECB press release that so many women are now playing cricket.
I'd be interested to know where they all are as the club where I am a member, which has been established for over 50 years has been in danger of folding for the last 15 years. We are in a city with a population of over 200,000 have to use coersion and persuasion to get eleven women to play each week.
I know our captain spends much of the week on the phone trying to get people to play (often women/girls who have never played before but will make up the numbers). We have tried sending posters to schools and sports centres and have set up our own web site but receive very little response and very few new players. If things don't look up soon our dedicated but aging core of players may decide they've had enough and another club will fold.
If anyone has any ideas how we could improve our situation we would love to hear from them. Needless to say, new players are always very welcome.
The club is Bradford Ladies in West Yorkshire, England. If you would like to see our website, go to

To Jakoba from germany
I read your message and I think it would be good to press
your local sports authority of your town to start a cricket
team. I'm sure you'll find good support from any people who
are interested.
